The gut-brain axis

The gut-brain axis—or the biochemical signaling that takes place between the GI tract, our gut microbiome, and the central nervous system; our brain—is uncovering the dark matter to some of human’s largest health concerns.

Microbes, byproducts, waste—historically synonymous with disease—are substances to be sterilized, cleansed, and flushed away. But we are learning to recapture their vast potential. And a key microbial material at the crux of this shift from revulsion to renaissance is human fecal waste (stool, feces, poop, shit).

Science and experience increasingly reveal stool to be so much more than a waste product. It is a diagnostic tool containing microbial, chemical, physiological, and functional indicators of human health. Decoding its components helps us understand behaviors, dysbiosis, infection, and even cancer.

One prospect of poop—as transplants—is shedding light on the vast new potentials human feces can be used for.

Fecal Microbiota Transplants (FMT) take a microbial sample from the stool of a healthy donor to be taken by individuals suffering from certain diseases. This treatment has a nearly 100% cure rate for the deadly gut infection Clostridium difficile, which has become resistant to antibiotic treatment.

Science is beginning to further uncover the links between the GI tract and the brain in relation to neurological and neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s. Research has shown promise, with FMTs specifically, in dramatically improving behavior and gut symptoms among children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).¹

Despite the vast anatomical distance between our gut and brain, these important advancements in research highlight the two-way bridge that spans the divide, linking our brain and behavior, to bowels.

Seed Health seeks to cultivate the research at the forefront of this paradigm shift of waste, and support the organizations that are harnessing the power of poop for improving human health. Inspired by this mission, we have commissioned a one-of-a-kind physical sculpture of artist Matty Mo’s fecal matter to mint as an NFT (non-fungible token) on the blockchain to help fund the next generation of academic gut-brain axis research, related to the potential of FMT approaches for improvement of autism and neurodegenerative diseases.
